Samsung testing Project Valley with a foldable display, and it’s not the Galaxy S7

Despite the criticisms, one cannot deny that Samsung has been at the helm of display technology in modern day smartphones. We saw the first smartphone featuring a Super AMOLED display and the latest from the company’s stables was the Galaxy S6 Edge, the world’s first sporting a dual-edge curved display. Now, the Korean manufacturer is going a notch ahead as its reportedly prepping the launch of the first smartphone featuring a foldable display as early as next year.

A credible leakster who claims to have internal knowledge of the project, dubbed as Project Valley aka Project V. According to him, the company is testing the device with two hardware configurations – one with Snapdragon 620 while the other is being tested on a Snapdragon 820 chipset. At this point it’s not clear whether there’ll actually be two variants of the device or the company is just looking for the most optimum chipset.

Other rumored specs on device include 3GB of RAM, a microSD slot along with a non-removable battery. The smartphone has been tipped for a January release next year, which could be unveiled at MWC or perhaps a separate event.

In addition, the report also suggests that Samsung has been heavily testing Snapdragon 820, which suggests that the company could be launching the Galaxy S7 in two variants, one featuring the Exynos 8890 processor while the other will be Snapdragon 820 SoC. Hence, the device we’re talking about isn’t the Galaxy S7, and reportedly could only be released in South Korea.

With sales of Apple’s iPhones on a constant rise, the Korean manufacturer has been losing its market share. Samsung is now coming up with unique ways to differentiate its devices with innovations like dual-curved display and S-pen stylus. Hence, a phone with a foldable display could be exactly what the manufacturer needs to regain lost ground.
