With an increased demand from retailers, Tag Heuer has decided to produce more of its Carrera Connected smartwatch. The Swiss Watch manufacturer’s CEO Jean Claude Biver said the company will be increasing the production of the Android wear smartwatch from 1200 to 2000 pieces in a week. In addition, he also said that the company will also be blocking online sales until May or June 2016 so as to catch up with the demand of physical retailers.
The outspoken Biver has positioned the Tag Heuer brand as the first luxury watch manufacturer to enter the smartwatch business with a “big bang”, at a time when many doubted the success of a luxury Android Wear smartwatch.
Some of the highlights of the Carrera connected smartwatch is its titanium construction and trans-reflective display. It’s a slick looking smartwatch which certainly looks more classier than other smartwatch offerings out there.
Biver now says that the company is planning to offer follow up Connected watches starting late 2016 or early 2017 in response to string interest, which could possibly include high-end watches featuring gold and diamonds.
“Considering the success of this single and unique watch, we will develop a collection made out of different varieties, executions and materials at the end of next year or beginning of 2017,” Biver said. The extension could include a gold and a diamond set version, he added.
The Swiss watch manufacturer has a long legacy of making niche watches that dates back over 150 years. The company is rather known for its chronographs often used in Formula 1 races, commonly known as stopwatch.
