Apple unveils ‘Smart Battery Case’ for iPhone 6 and 6S for $99

Apple has launched its first official battery pack for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S called as the ‘Smart Battery Case’. The Cupertino giant has put the gadget for sale on its website and claims it extends the battery life of compatible iPhones by up to 25 hours.

The case is made of soft touch silicone and micro fiber material, which will be available in charcoal gray and white color variants. Apple says that users will be able to see the battery levels of both the iPhone along with the Smart Battery on iPhone’s notifications center.

Also, the iPhone’s lock screen will also keep users constantly updated about the charge level of the smartphone’s battery along with external battery when users plug the charger in the case. The case charges via the company’s standard Lightning cable though surprisingly Apple hasn’t mentioned the mAh rating of the case implying we’ve no idea about the exact battery capacity. However, the company touts that the Smart Case would increase extends the battery life by up to 25 hours of talk time, or up to 18 hours of web browsing over 4G while running audio and video playback.

Though one can clearly notice the case’s battery bump, housed right in the middle of the case on the iPhone’s rear. Apart from the bump, the case looks like any other standard battery cases for the iPhone from Apple. Apple, who seems to be on a quest to make its devices thinner every year clearly did not want to mess iPhone’s sleek design language, even if they’ve to accommodate a bump on the back.

The Smart Battery Case has been priced at , which currently only works with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S.

Interested users can head over to Apple’s official website and order the case, with deliveries expected between December 10 and December 15.

Meanwhile, a recent report also suggested that Apple is planning to ditch the conventional 3.5mm jack in upcoming iPhones that’ll be replaced by the Lightning-enabled adapter, which would further reduce iPhone’s thickness by 1mm. Hence, given the fact how slim the 6S already is, makes one wonder whether the company really need to reduce iPhone’s thickness any further.
