Android 6.0 Marshmallow is the latest version of the Android operating system. Google rolled out the Marshmallow update in October. Since then it has gradually been making its way onto phones. Now, HTC has confirmed that One M8 and M9 handsets are getting a Marshmallow update.
HTC initially promised to update its M9 model in December 2015 with Android 6.0. However, only the unlocked model got a Marshmallow update. Other models such as the Verizon HTC One M9 did not get any updates then.
HTC has announced an immediate Android 6.0 update for carrier variants of the One M8. Consequently, Marshmallow is now effectively available for the older version of the phone. Note that doesn’t include Sprint and T-Mobile variants of M8 and the M9. However, HTC quickly confirmed that an M9 Marshmallow update will follow shortly, which will probably be a week or two.
HTC’s Mo Versi revealed the details about the latest update. He confirmed via Twitter that HTC is not leaving Canada out of the update: “Great news for our SaskTel, Rogers, Wind and Videotron HTC One M9 owners! We’ll go live on Monday for the Marshmallow OS update. Thank you!”
Note that the UK M9 models have yet to get an Android 6.0 update. As alternative regions have different software requirements, the update times aren’t the same. In addition, carrier testing phases might also delay the HTC Android 6 updates by a few a weeks in the US.
So if you have a HTC One M8 or Canada M9, check out the Android 6 update. You’ll need to select Settings > About and Software Updates.
When you’ve got your Marshmallow update, you can expect longer-lasting battery. Its new Doze and Standby modes switch devices to an inactive mode to save battery. In addition, the latest Android platform includes support for fingerprint recognition, a new Assist API and new permission model for apps compiled with the software development kit.
So now the Android 6.0 update has arrived for the HTC One M8 and M9 in the US, Canada and the UK. Other HTC models such as the E9 +, ME, E8, 826, 820 and 816 will also be getting the new Android OS.
