Apple and Google are renowned for software, hardware and search engines. Android, iOS, Mac OS X, Google Chrome and the iPhone are just a few of their notable software and hardware. However, neither of the companies are especially renowned for cars. That could change in the foreseeable future as the Daimler (Mercedes-Benz parent company) chairman has stated that both companies have made notable progress with their car projects.
Both Apple and Google have invested in self-driving car projects. Project Titan is Apple’s own electric car project.
It’s an unconfirmed project in which Apple is supposedly building electric, potentially self-driving, cars.
Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook stated, “It would seem like there will be a massive change in that industry, massive change. You may not agree with that. That’s what I think… We’ll see what we do in the future. I do think that the industry is at an inflection point for massive change.”
Google has also been researching self-driving cars. That’s not a big secret, and the Google cars include Chauffeur software. The company has already unveiled prototypes.
Now the Daimler chairman has conceded that both Google and Apple have made notable progress in the car industry. He stated, “Our impression was that these companies can do more and know more than we had previously assumed.”
That comes after Zetsche met with the chairmen from Silicon Valley firms. The recent meetings highlighted that Apple and Google have made great progress with their car projects.
It isn’t entirely clear whether Daimler is going to make some sort of deal with Apple and Google, but Zetsche also stated, “There were concrete talks. I will not say anything about the content.
It was not just about the fact that there is an innovative spirit in the Valley. We know that already. We wanted to see what drives it, and all the things that can be created from it.”
So self-driving cars could be the next big thing. Apple and Google might play a greater part in developing them than some might have expected.
