Microsoft launches Signature Type Cover for Surface Pro 4 and Pro 3 for $159.99, Lacks Fingerprint ID

Microsoft has given the Surface Pro 4 Type Cover a luxurious makeover by introducing a new high-end version done up in Alcantara. While it is true the covering material is usually considered the last word when it comes to adding a dash of style to the top of the line products; the same does make for a stunning accompaniment for the Surface Pro 4.

Surprisingly, Microsoft isn’t trumpeting around town the launch of the new “Signature” version of the Type Cover for Surface Pro 4 devices, perhaps leaving it on to the covers itself to do the speaking. The covers, while being promoted to be compatible with the Pro 4 can pair up with the Surface Pro 3 just as well.

Also, while the Signature Type Cover with its ‘two-tone gray mélange style of Alcantara’ does look and feel good, what is likely to piss off many an eager buyer is the lack of a dedicated fingerprint scanner.

A Type Cover with an integrated Windows Hello-compatible fingerprint scanner is already available, which comes in a black shade and costs $159.99. Interestingly, the Signature Type Cover also costs the same $159.99, which means it is up to the buyers to decide – whether to for a Type Cover offering better security or one that makes a stunning style statement. Or maybe the Redmond company has another version of the Signature Type Cover up its sleeve, one that comes with a fingerprint scanner but again, costing a bit more.

“Alcantara material ages beautifully, growing richer and darker over time and is wonderfully soft to touch. The Signature Type Cover was crafted from the latest generation of Surface Pro keyboards, which provides the perfect amount of travel in every keystroke, spaced keys for faster typing, and a larger glass trackpad,” the Type Cover’s site explains.

In any case, the launch of the Signature Type Cover can well be considered a step in the right direction for Microsoft as it tries to reach out to a wider section of the buyers by offering unique and exquisitely crafted products or versions thereof.

Starting at $159.99, the new Signature Type Cover is available through Microsoft stores and at select retailers in the United States, Australia, Austria, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
