Japanese manufacturer NuAns has launched a Kickstarter campaign that would see a worldwide launch of its unique Neo Windows Phone. It makes for an interesting development considering that Windows Phone has almost faded from public memory, and Microsoft itself isn’t pushing its sales anymore, as of now at least.
That, however, isn’t stopping NuAns from seeking 750,000 that it hopes to raise on Kickstarter with individuals pledging $250 or more. As things stand right now, those interested might have to hurry as the $270 slot seems to be running out fast. While that shows the device might have some potential, the wider opinion seems quite unanimous on the device’s appeal being more due to its unique looks than its Windows lineage, or for that matter, any outrageous specifications which the device apparently lacks.
Coming to what can be considered the biggest Unique selling proposition of the device, the Neo handset comes with a two-tone rear shell that can make the device stand out from the rest. That is not all as there also exists a huge choice of materials for the back panels, which ranges from wood, suede and also ostrich. The fact that the rear is comprised of two separate and interchangeable panels further adds to the mobile’s customization option.
However, the Neo is sold without the back panel, and buyers have the choice of using either the two-tone rear shell or a flip cover which also doubles up as the stand to make up the rear.
The NuAns Nu otherwise comes across as a mediocre phone at best with matching specs. That includes a 5-inch 720p display, 1.5 GHz Snapdragon 617 chip, 2 GB of RAM, and 16 GB of storage. The latter bit sure is pathetic though fortunately there is also a microSD slot to add another 128 GB.
Another standout feature of the device is its compatibility with Windows Continuum, which means the handset can transform into a small PC of sorts when connected to an external display. The device, however, is a bit clunky which perhaps makes it farthest removed from the sleek and thin design philosophy currently in vogue.
These apart, the handset also feature a 13-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front shooter. Power comes from a 3,350mAh battery which the company claims is good for 16-hours of service. There is also a USB-C connector that is compatible with Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 2.0. The Neo also offers NFC support which should allow for mobile payments once the feature is launched in the forthcoming Windows 10 Anniversary update.
