Google is all set to usher in Android Wear 2.0 on Feb. 9, claimed Evan Blass, which will mark the second generation of Android’s smartwatch specific operating system. That is not all as the serial leakster also claimed Google will mark the occasion by launching two new smartwatch devices – LG’s Watch Sport and Watch Style – which will also be the first from the search giant.
Blass also mentioned the two new smartwatches will be on sale in the US from the next day itself, with other regions in the world getting it in a phased manner later on. Google’s plans to launch a smartwatch aren’t exactly a surprising development considering that the Android Wear’s product manager Jeff Chang had already confirmed such plans last year itself.
Meanwhile, two smartwatches will include a circular 1.38-inch display for the LG Watch Sport, lit up by 480 x 480 pixels. On the inside, the wearable will have a 768 MB RAM along with 4 GB of storage while a 430mAh battery would be providing the juice.
The Watch Sport will be 14.2 mm thick with titanium and dark blue being the choice of colors. Among the other features of the Watch Sport include a heart rate sensor, GPS and NFC. Further, the Sport version will also be the only version to come with integrated cellular connectivity, with compliance with both 3G and LTE networks.
The Watch Style will be thinner at just 10.8 mm while also offering a slightly smaller round watch-face that measure 1.2-inches. The rest of the details too are a bit scaled down, which includes a 360 x 360 pixel layout, 512 MB RAM, 4 GB storage along with a 240mAh battery.
Plastic OLED touch enabled display will be common to both the smartwatch variants, as will be Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity options. A digital crown button on both will allow for easy navigation and will come loaded with Google Assistant, besides being iOS compatible as well. Further, both the Watch Sport and Style are rated for IPS68 and IPS67 levels of water and dust resistance respectively.
No details on pricing as yet though guess that will be revealed closer to the launch date. Meanwhile, here is the list of smartwatches that would be compatible with the upcoming Android Wear 2.0 upgrade: Moto 360 Gen 2, Moto 360 Sport, LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition LTE, LG Watch Urbane, LG G Watch R; Polar M600, Casio Smart Outdoor Watch, Nixon Mission, TAG Heuer Connected, Fossil Q Wander, Fossil Q Marshal, Fossil Q Founder, Michael Kors Access Bradshaw Smartwatch, Michael Kors Access Dylan Smartwatch, Huawei Watch, Huawei Watch Ladies, Asus ZenWatch 2 and Asus ZenWatch 3.
