Apple iPhone 15 Dynamic Island may have proximity sensors integrated

Reports suggest that Apple is planning to introduce the Dynamic Island feature to its entire iPhone lineup with the launch of the iPhone 15 this fall. As a part of this upgrade, the company is also planning to move the proximity sensor inside the Dynamic Island. This sensor is responsible for turning off the iPhone screen when a user brings the phone close to their ear during a call. It also helps optimize the Always-On Display of the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. In the iPhone 14 Pro, the proximity sensor was located below the Dynamic Island and underneath the display.

Based on information from his industry sources, Kuo has tweeted that the proximity sensor in the iPhone 15 series will be located inside the Dynamic Island with minimal changes to its size. Users are not expected to notice any significant difference, and Apple is likely making this change to save on manufacturing costs.

According to Kuo, the change in the location of the proximity sensor in the iPhone 15 series will have technical differences. The new proximity sensor will have a smaller wavelength of 940nm compared to 1380nm in the iPhone 14 Pro, which is expected to bring performance advantages over the older component. While this change will be applied to the display of all iPhone 15 models, advanced display features such as always-on and ProMotion will continue to be exclusive to the Pro models.

An anonymous Twitter user, Unknownz21, has confirmed the rumored change to the proximity sensor in the upcoming iPhone 15 series in a recent tweet. According to Unknownz21, the new 940nm wavelength proximity sensor will be included in both the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models, under the codename “Sphinx,” as part of the “Single Pearl Module.” It’s worth noting that “Pearl” is the term Apple uses to describe Face ID.
