Sony Xperia XZ Premium makes a splash at the MWC 2017 along with 3 new smartphones

Sony has come up with its year 2017 flagship in the form of the XZ Premium though accompanying the high-end stuff is three other smartphone offerings – Xperia XZs, Xperia XA1, and Xperia XA1 Ultra – spread across different segments.

Xperia XZ Premium: To begin with the Xperia XZ Premium, the smartphone offers an interesting design perspective what its almost zero bezel around the sides while being noticeably thicker along the top and bottom. Whether or not that hits the consumer sweet spot remains to be seen though the rest of the specification remains top notch.

That includes the latest Snapdragon 835 processor which also makes the Sony flagship the first handset to come with the newest Snapdragon chip. There also is the Adreno 540 GPU to deal with graphics processing and is duly assisted by a 4 GB RAM along with a 64 GB of storage. The latter is again further expandable to a max 256 GB using microSD cards.

A 5.5-inch Triluminos HDR display of 4K resolution makes up the front. Another highlight of the new Sony XZ Premium is its vastly enhanced camera capabilities that boast of the company’s latest Motion Eye camera tech. This allows the 19MP sensor five-time better scanning and data transfer speeds. As Sony explained, this allows the camera to record videos at 960fps while playing back videos in ‘Super slow motion’ which is at least four times slower than the best offerings in the segment. A 13-megapixel camera with 1/3.06-inch Exmor RS sensor at the front promises superior selfie shots.

The rest of XZ Premium specs include a 3230mAh battery, USB Type-C port, Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, GPS + GLONASS, NFC along with Android Nougat as the default OS.

Xperia XZs: The XZs is slightly less premium with a Snapdragon 820 chip at its core, and a 5.2-inch full HD Triluminos display up front. Adreno 510 GPU deals with complex graphics processing while installed memory stands at 4 GB. Internal storage options include 32 GB and 64 GB though another 256 GB can be added via microSD cards.

Xperia XA1 and Xperia XA1 Ultra: Both can be considered to be a derivative of the Xperia XA handset Sony had launched earlier. Also, needless to say, XA1 Ultra is the bigger of the two with its 6-inch full HD display and comes powered by the 64-bit MediaTek Helio P20 octa-core chip and Mali T880 MP2 900MHz GPU combo.

The device boasts a 4 GB RAM along with internal storage options of 32 GB and 64 GB, with the latter further expandable to a max of 256 GB using microSD cards. A 2,700mAh battery keeps the thing going.

The XA1 Ultra is about superior photographic capabilities thanks to its rear 23MP Exmor RS image sensor that boasts of advanced features such as hybrid autofocus, 24mm wide-angle lens, f/2.0 aperture, 5x zoom, and HDR mode. A 16MP Exmor RS sensor with 23mm wide-angle lens, f/2.0 aperture, OIS, and autofocus along with a flash is accommodated at the front.

The Xperia XA1 shares a lot similarities with the XA1 Ultra except that it comes with a 5-inch 720p display, 3 GB RAM along with 32 GB of storage. Also, it’s a smaller 2,300mAh battery that provides the power while the front cam has also been downgraded with an 8MP unit with no flash or OIS support.
