According to reports, Samsung is planning to make the next iteration of its Galaxy Z Fold series thinner and lighter than the previous models. The current Galaxy Z Fold 4 weighs 263g, and the company’s top executives have instructed the engineers to create a new model that is significantly lighter. The new foldable phone is expected to be launched later this year.
ETNews reported that the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is expected to be thinner and lighter than the Galaxy Z Fold 4, with a weight of around 250g. This report supports a previous one from last month that indicated the Fold 5 would be approximately 10g lighter than the Fold 4. The expected weight reduction of 13g is significant and likely due to the new hinge design, which is also responsible for the anticipated one-millimeter reduction in thickness.
In addition to the weight reduction, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 is also rumored to feature a redesigned hinge that will be smaller and lighter than the previous models. The hinge has been a major point of contention for foldable phones, as it has been known to cause a visible crease in the display. The new hinge is expected to address this issue and contribute to the weight reduction of the device.
The new hinge design of the Galaxy Z Fold 5 is likely similar to that of the OPPO Find N2 which features an ultra-thin glass that bends into a waterdrop shape when the phone is folded closed. This allows the phone to fold flat, as opposed to current Samsung foldable devices which have a small gap at the hinge when closed, resulting in a trapezoidal shape. Additionally, the new hinge design almost completely eliminates the display crease that is common in Samsung’s previous foldable phones.
However, this isn’t any information available on whether the Galaxy Z Fold 5 will be dust-resistant or not even though previous reports have suggested that the device may be both water and dust resistant. While the new model is expected to be thinner and lighter than the Galaxy Z Fold 4, it is not expected to include an S Pen silo, according to the report.
Meanwhile, we seem to have an idea of the color options the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 will come in. According to DSCC CEO Ross Young, the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 is going to be available in shades of Beige, Gray, Light Green, and Light Pink. The Galaxy Z Fold5, on the other hand, will be available in Beige, Black, and Light Blue hues. Young also expects Samsung to give these colors more unique names when they are officially launched, along with other custom and limited-edition colors.
Recently, both the Galaxy Z Fold5 and the Galaxy Z Flip5 were detected on Geekbench where the two foldable phones were mentioned to be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 For Galaxy processor, which is also used in the top-of-the-line Galaxy S23 series. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is a high-performance chip that should deliver excellent performance and energy efficiency, making it well-suited to power foldable devices. It will be exciting to see how Samsung optimizes its software to take advantage of the new hardware.
It’s worth noting that while rumors and leaks can give us a good idea of what to expect from upcoming devices, it’s important to take them with a grain of salt. Plans can change, and not all rumors turn out to be true. Only time will tell what features Samsung will actually include in its next generation of foldable phones.
