Owners of the OnePlus 2 phone who might have been waiting with bated breath for the Nougat update to arrive on their handsets are in for some disappointment; for the said update will never come. This has been confirmed by OnePlus stating they didn’t have the ‘software infrastructure team’ they now have when OnePlus 2 was launched.
The above denial is also in gross violation of what the Chinese manufacturer had professed when they launched the OnePlus 2. That was in late-July 2015 and the company had then stated they would continue to provide the latest Android updates for 24 months. OnePlus officials had even reiterated the above last year, which makes the cancellation of the said update even more shocking.
The OnePlus 2 came pre-installed with Android 5.1.1. Although it had the company’s proprietary Oxygen UI running on top, what amazed buyers is the most unobtrusive nature of the user interface. In fact, so understated the UI has been, and hence such has been the prominence of the near stock Android that the phone exuded the same feel as say a Nexus or a Pixel device.
Unfortunately, the arrangement that OnePlus had with Cyanogen went for a toss in between, forcing the company to set up its own dedicated software division. This in turn has led to the company developing its own Android derived OS which they have named Oxygen.
However, while that ensures handsets such as the OnePlus 3 and 3T would be better placed to get all the updates they deserve, OnePlus 2 owners aren’t lucky. The company had in the meantime confirmed both the OnePlus 3 and 3T are eligible for the Android O update.
Meanwhile, OnePlus also stated their move to cancel the Nougat update for OnePlus 2 shouldn’t come as a surprise as they had been informing the owners of this for some time now. However, what the company chose to side-line is that it is only those customers who had enquired of the update were informed it’s not forthcoming.
As such, the best that OnePlus 2 owners can do under the circumstances will be to install custom ROM on their devices.
