Intel has launched its 8th generation of Core series chips – the Core i7-8700K which it claims to be the fastest it has ever produced for desktop gaming PCs. Though not officially confirmed, the new chip will also form part of a family christened Coffee Lake.
Elaborating further, the general manager of the desktop platform group at Intel, Anand Srivatsa said the new Core i7-8700K will have a 6 core and 12 tread architecture. This, Srivatsa claimed will endow the chip with enough oomph to allow for 25 percent improvement in frame per second while running games like the Gear’s of War 4 compared to the Core i7-7700K chip. For comparison’s sake, the Core i7-7700K comes with a 4 core and 8 thread setup.
That, however, isn’t all as Intel also launched half a dozen new chips which marks considerable performance improvement over their predecessor. The top of the heap is, of course, the Intel Core i7-8700K that features 6 cores and 12 threads. The chip maxes out at 3.7 GHz but can be further boosted to 4.7 GHz. The chip is priced $359.
Then there also is the Intel Core i7-8700K that too comprises of 6 cores and 12 threads but has a slightly lower max clock speed of 3.2 GHz, which can be further boosted to 4.6 GHz. The chip comes for $303.
Lower down the order is Intel Core i5-8600K that boasts of a 6 cores and 6 thread architecture. The chip has a max clock speed of 3.6 GHz, which can be further stretched to 4.3 GHz. The chip is priced $257.
The other offering in the same segment is the Intel Core i5-8400 chip having 6 cores and 6 threads. The chip clocks at 2.8 GHz but can be boosted to 4 GHz. The chip comes for $182.
The Core i3 series makes up the bottom though you have two choices here – the Intel Core i3-8350K with 4 cores and 4 threads. The chip has a max clock speed of 4 GHz with no boost feature and is priced $168.
Intel announces 10nm+ Ice Lake even before it has launched the 10nm Cannon Lake
The last of the lot here is the Intel Core i3-8100 chip that too features 4 cores and 4 threads. The chip has a max clock speed of 3.6-GHz and like its other i3 cousin has no boost capability. Not surprisingly, the chip is the most affordable at $117.
Intel also stated they would begin taking orders for the chip starting October 5, with deliveries slated to begin by the fourth quarter of the year.
