OnePlus has confirmed it is discontinuing its first flagship of the year, the OnePlus 5 now that it has the more advanced OnePlus 5T to take the battle forward. It has just been this June that the OnePlus 5 was launched and five months down the line there will be as many of the phone on offer as there are stocks of it.
Also, if the above seems an amusing step on the part of the Chinese manufacturer, the same again isn’t without precedent. The OnePlus 3 too was discontinued once the 3T entered the scene. And much like the 3T happens to be quite an improvement over the OnePlus 3, the 5T too comes across as a huge leap over the OnePlus 5.
In fact, it is the 5T that the company should have come up with in the first place given how dated the OnePlus 5 looked and felt right from the start. In that vein, the impending demise of the OnePlus 5 isn’t likely to be felt too hard, except for those who have already invested in the OnePlus 5.
Also, with two instances now of OnePlus choosing to discontinue its first flagship, repercussions of the same is certain to be felt among its fans henceforth. It is likely there won’t be many takers of the OnePlus 6 now that they know there will be a 6T following soon thereafter. Buyers of the OnePlus 5 should already be ruing their luck for having bought a device that has become almost obsolete within just months.
As for the OnePlus 5T, the device now boasts of a more modern design highlighted by the 18:9 aspect ratio display. Also, in line with the current design trend, the front of the device is almost all display with minimal bezel interruptions. This has also necessitated the shifting of the fingerprint sensor to the rear as the home button no longer exists. The rear camera too has been worked upon a bit though it remains to be seen how much of an improvement it being along.
