Samsung announces mass production of 16 GB GDDR6 graphic RAM

Samsung announced they have commenced production of 16 GB Graphics Double Data Rate 6 or GDDR6 memory which makes it the first company in the world to do so.

Samsung said the new 16 GB GDDR6 graphics memory will usher in a new generation of high-speed computational capability in the field of artificial intelligence, virtual reality and augmented reality. Besides, the same has ample scope for application in new-age processes such as self-driving technology that requires processing of huge chunks of info within just a fraction of a second.

Also, of course, the new generation memory has immense potential for use in the gaming industry as well. Another likely application areas of the new 16 GB memory will be 8K Ultra HD video processing though that is more of a future case scenario right now given that 8K TVs have just begin to appear on the commercial scene.

As or its specifications, Samsung said the new 16 GB GDDR6 memory has been built using the 10-nm manufacturing process. That no doubt makes for a huge improvement over the current 8 GB GDDR5 memory which is based on a 20-nm manufacturing process.

Performance figures are equally impressive at 18-Gbps of pin speed which the company said is double that of the 8 Gb GDDR5 memory which is capable of 8G-Gbps pin speed. Similarly, data transfer speeds achieved is 72-Gbps.

What is even more impressive is that all the above performance gains do not come at the cost of power consumption. Rather, Samsung said the new 16 GB GDDR6 memory is capable of operating at just 1.35V. That makes for 35 percent improvement over the 1.55V that its predecessor required for operation. That is not all as the new 16 Gb GDDR6 also allows for 30 percent gain in manufacturing productivity over the 8 Gb GDDR5 built using 20-nm process.

However, with the production having just started, it could still be a some time at least before we get to see the new 16 GB GDDR6 memory in action.
