Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium launched, offers more premium specs over the Xperia XZ2

Sony has launched the Xperia XZ2 Premium which happens to be the more up-market version of the Xperia XZ2 that the company introduced at the Mobile World Congress. As expected, the XZ2 Premium comes across as a more advanced version over the XZ2.

The improvement is perhaps nowhere more perceptible as in the rear which now sports a dual lens camera. While that happens to be a first on any Sony smartphone so far, the company is also busy convincing all the camera is also among the best the world has ever seen on a smartphone.

The company is also backing its claim of ‘the most remarkable cameras ever made in a smartphone’ using some hard-core facts. Those include ISO 12800 sensitivity for video recording which, according to Sony, is the highest ever on a smartphone. An ISO 51200 ultra-sensitivity for photos is also being quoted though that is half that of the Huawei P20 Pro.

All of those translate to excellent quality of images – both video and still – even in extreme low light conditions. The twin camera system otherwise comprises of a 19 MP color and 12 MP monochrome sensor arranged in a vertical stack along the center of the phone’s rear.

The above arrangement of a color and monochrome lens is however markedly different from the zoom and telephone lens combo employed by the likes of Apple or Samsung. Sony claimed its AUBE fusion image signal processor combines the image from both sensors and optimizes them to offer excellent quality photos even in low light scenarios.

Users will also have the ability to shoot black and white only images as well. That together with the ‘Bokeh mode’ will, however, be available only by way of a software update due out in Q3 this year. Meanwhile, there also is a 13 MP selfie camera up front.

The camera apart, the other aspect that makes the ZX2 Premium stand out from the XZ2 include a bigger display though the difference is only slightly perceptible if at all – 5.8-inch on the Premium compared to 5.7-inch on the base version. Both the displays, however, support 4K HDR mode.

The battery too has seen an upgrade, 3,540mAh compared to 3,180mAh on the base XZ2. The rest of the specs of the XZ2 Premium include a Snapdragon 845 chipset mated to a 6 GB RAM and will run Android 8.0 Oreo right out of the gates. The phone is also rated for IP65/68 levels of water and dust resistance. Choice of colors is however restricted to only Chrome Black and Chrome Silver.
