The next iteration of Android that we have known so far simply as Android P is finally here in all its official glory. The version is being named Android 9 Pie, and the same is also available for downloading on all Pixel branded phones anywhere in the world right away. The update is available over-the-air and Pixels users will do well to check if the update is already on offer for their devices.
Also, unlike past instances, the Google Pixel phones aren’t the only ones to be getting the latest Android 9 Pie update. Rather, the list of phones that qualify for the update is rather long. That includes flagship devices from Sony, Xiaomi, Nokia, Oppo, Vivo, OnePlus, HMD Global and Essential. The update will also apply to all Android One devices as well.
That makes quite a few devices getting to taste the new Android Pie right away though Google clarified releasing the update for other phones would be the sole discretion of the carrier and individual device manufacturers. In any case, Google revealed on its blog post it should around fall this year for Android Pie to be reaching out to partner devices.
As for the more standout features of Android P, well there are many. Those include the much talked about Digital Wellbeing dashboard that would serve to keep the user better informed of the extent of usage the phone has been put to. Meanwhile, Android P will also have support for iPhone X-like gesture controls to allow for a more convenient means of navigation.
That apart, there is also going to be a healthy dose of AI-based inputs as well which Google said will make the OS more efficient. One way that is going to be achieved is enhancing the battery life by allowing for more intelligent app usage to optimize battery consumption. Plus, there is going to be built-in support for the notch as well this time, which means a sort of universal acceptance of the particular design feature.
Unfortunately, all features aren’t going to be available right away and is expected to arrive only around fall this year.
