Here finally is the real thing after the almost incessant round of leaks, the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL in all its formal glory. Both the devices have been launched at the much-publicized Made By Google Event held in New York even though much of the details have already been known for months now.
Of course, Google too is all too aware of that, and that should explain the company focussing more on its other stealth weapon – Artificial Intelligence and the way the same can enhance the user experience with the phone. And the one aspect that seems to benefit the most from AI is perhaps the imaging abilities of the phone.
Mention must be made of the Top Shot mode where users can be guaranteed to have the best shot possible. There is the Super Res Zoom feature as well which ensures users can zoom in to the max without sacrificing on the image quality. Google said this is achieved by using several frames which are then merged to make up for the loss in resolution even at the max zoom setting.
Similarly, the Night Sight mode will allow for better photography in low light conditions without using the flash. Also here is one for the selfie addicts, the new Group Selfie Cam which will allow for the widest possible selfie shots. Google said the new Group Selfie Cam is, in fact, capable of capturing 184 percent more of the scene that the new iPhone XS is able to.
Then there is the Motion AutoFocus mode as well that will ensure the main subjects are always in focus while shooting videos. And to add to the fun aspect, there are lots of AR stickers that users can play around with. There are lots of characters that one can choose, which includes The Avengers as well.
As for its specs, the Pixel 3 comes with a 5.5-inch 1080 x 2160 pixel display. The phone comes with a 4 GB RAM and 64 GB of storage while a 2915mAh battery keeps the lights on. The front boasts of two 8-megapixel cameras while the rear comprises of a single lens 12.2-megapixel camera which belies a current trend where manufacturers have taken to packing multiple sensors on the rear.
Coming to the larger Pixel 3 XL, the phone comes with a 6.3-inch 1440 x 2960 pixel display. The XL version too comes with a base 4 GB RAM/ 64 GB storage model though the top model comes with 128 GB of native storage. It also comes with a higher rated 3430mAh battery though the rest of the details are almost the same. That applies to the exactly similar camera setup while both devices feature Android 9.0 Pie right out of the box. Needless to say, both come pre-installed with the latest Google Assistant software as well.
As for its prices, the Pixel 2 costs $799 while the Pixel 3 XL will set one back $899. That makes the new Pixel range quite competitive compared to other top-tier flagships of the year that retails in the vicinity of 00 or more.
The Pixel 3 range meanwhile ships on Oct. 19 and will see a global rollout starting November 1.
