The Chinese seem to have hit upon a novel idea of doing away with notches – using a slider mechanism instead for housing the front-facing cam. The Honor Magic 2 is a fine example of this but is not a pioneer here, what with the likes of the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 or the Lenovo Z5 Pro having already showcased a similar setup prior to the Magic 2.
Needless to say, the slider form factor ensures the Magic 2 has a true edge-to-edge front display with no notch disrupting the flow. The front is dominated entirely by a 6.4-inch OLED panel of Full HD+ resolution. The display has a 19:9 aspect ratio and also includes a 2.5D glass sitting on top of it.
However, if the worth of a smartphone is to be judged by the number of cameras it has, as seems to be the newest rule of the game, the new Magic 2 has half a dozen of those spread evenly across the front and rear. The camera setup at the rear comprises of a 16MP primary camera of f/1.8 focal length, a 24MP monochromatic camera having a focal length of f/1.8 along with a 16MP camera with a super wide angle lens and f/2.2 aperture.
The trio of a front-facing camera is slightly less elaborate in that it comprises of a main 16MP camera of f/2.0 aperture and is flanked on either side with two cameras of 2MP resolution. As Honor explained, the two 2MP assistive cameras are designed to provide for bokeh effect besides supporting several other portrait modes as well. Notably, there are no telephoto lens on either the front and rear.
Powering the device is the company’s own HiSilicon Kirin 980 chip hat is built as per the 7nm manufacturing process. There is going to be two versions of the phone, featuring 6 GB or 8 GB of RAM mated to either 128 GB or 256 GB of storage respectively. Another unique aspect of the phone though one that again is fast becoming commonplace is the in-screen fingerprint sensor that the Magic 2 comes with.
Meanwhile, keeping the lights on is a 3400 mAh battery which Honor boasts will support 40W capabilities which the company termed as Magic Charge. That translates to 50 percent charge acquired in just 15 mins. The phone, however, lacks a 3.5mm headphone jack, with a USB-C port acting instead as an audio port apart from rendering charging and data transfer services as well.

The Magic 2 is currently available only in China though there is no word yet as to when it’s going to be available elsewhere. Price starts at roughly $545 before climbing up to $700 for the top of the line version.
