The Huawei Mate 30 series is slated for its official unveiling on September 19. With that just days away, here comes what could well be the last of the leaks on the upcoming phone describing its looks and other aspects.
Among what has come to the fore, the top-end Mate 30 Pro is going to have a slim design but is shown to have a rather wide notch at the top, almost as expansive as on the iPhone series. Experts believe that could be to house a wide array of sensors to power some sort of a facial unlocking mechanism. It is not known though exactly how Huawei wishes to achieve that or what sensors, or whatever is placed within the notch.
The rest of the front is dominated almost entirely by the display, with just a thin strip of bezel placed along the bottom. Rather, the other fascinating aspect of the display is the manner it extends along the sides and almost up to the rear panel. That reminds of some Samsung flagship phones such as the Note 5 or subsequent models that had a curved display, while more recently some Oppo and Vivo phones too came with such curved screens.
Moving over to the rear, it’s the camera setup that again is the biggest draw, both for its sheer size as well as the number of sensors included. For there is shown to be four lenses and rumor has it that two of those have 40 mp resolution while there is a third lens of 8 mp. Complementing the trio is a time of flight sensor to measure depth info. The Leica branding on the rear is hard to miss as well.
The Mate 30 is supposed to be the model next in line and has a considerably smaller notch at the top. Interestingly, the Mate 30 also seems to have an even thinner bottom chin, almost to the extent of it being insignificant. Unfortunately, the rear of the Mate 30 is out of view so that there is no way to find out if the phone features the same camera layout as the 30 Pro.
Also, one aspect that likely will be one of the defining factors of both the Mate 30 Pro and the Mate 30 is a common heart – the Kirin 990 chipset. It is the latest from Huawei and built as it is following the 7nm process, what is almost guaranteed is top-notch performance. Also, there is a 5G variant of the Kirin 990 chipset, a special 5G version of the phone is being speculated for launch during the same event.
Another model sitting lower in the series is the Mate 30 Lite which again comes with significant changes to its looks. That includes a punch-hole design along the top left corner for the selfie cam and a squarish cut-out at the rear to accommodate the primary camera layout. The Mate 30 Lite also comes with a chin that too is significantly thicker than its peers.
A fingerprint sensor sitting right below the camera is hard to miss as well, which is another indication of its slightly lower stature compared to the Mate 30 Pro or the Mate 30. Both the 30 Pro and Mate 30 likely features under-screen fingerprint sensor while the 30 Pro likely comes with a facial recognition feature as well.
Meanwhile, a special Porsche Design edition too has been leaked and seems to have been modeled on the top-end Mate 30 Pro. The curved sides and the presence of multiple sensors at the top is a sure indication of that. However, the one striking aspect of the Porsche Design edition version of the rear which has a leather finish to it.
Gone is the circular camera cut-out as well. In its place, there is this distinct slot that houses the Leica branding and four camera sensors along the top, Porsche branding at the center and the Huawei company name along the bottom with the slot extending almost the entire length of the phone. The slot again has a distinct color scheme that makes it stand out of the rest.

So much for the look and specs, the one other thing that users or prospective buyers would perhaps be concerned of the most is the OS the phone will come preloaded it. Google has already announced it won’t be supporting the Mate 30 series, which means there won’t be access to Google Play Store, which could seriously limit the phone’s appeal elsewhere in the world. As such, it remains to be seen what platform the Mate 30 would be based on.
