Apple could be in a position to launch its first augmented reality headset by 2022, with a pair of augmented reality glasses expected from the company in another years’ time.
This, however, should not come as a surprise given that Apple has long been rumored to be working on AR headsets and glasses. That said, many have been taken back with the launch window as previous rumors had pegged the launch schedule at around 2020.
The launch details apart, what has also come to the fore is that the upcoming Apple AR headset will have a slimmer profile compared to the Oculus Quest. Unfortunately, that’s the nearest we have to benchmark the Apple headset though what also known is that there are going to be several cameras on the exterior to create an accurate map of the surroundings in real-time.
The cameras will also be intelligent enough to make out people and other objects around while the system will then be inserting the virtual objects onto the real footage in the most seamless manner. Not to mention, there is going to be a high-resolution display which will serve to be the main viewing area.
Apple is also reported to have made an internal representation of its upcoming AR venture at its headquarters, which sure is a sign of things reaching a maturation stage soon. Developers too are expected to be taken on board soon enough and will be asked to develop apps based on the new hardware platform. However, that likely will happen around 2021 only.
The launch of the new AR headset will also mark the introduction of what is being described as a new 3D sensor system. Based on time-of-flight technology, the new 3D sensor is believed to be an advanced version of the current Face ID technology that has become the standard authentication feature on iPhone devices.
The new 3D sensor is also in line to replace Face ID on future iPhone and iPad devices as well after it debuts on the AR headsets. The same will also be standard on the AR glasses as well which is slated for launch in 2023.

That privy to the developments has revealed the AR glasses to look like high-end sunglasses but have thick frames that will house the chips, battery and other tech paraphernalia. The glasses will still be comfortable enough to be worn for longer periods of time.
