Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 tipped to match S23 in battery life and camera performance

Samsung is on the verge of introducing its next-generation foldable smartphones, namely the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and the Galaxy Z Fold 5. While the Galaxy Z Fold 5 is anticipated to bring modest enhancements in battery life and performance, the real standout upgrade will be seen in the Galaxy Z Flip 5, thanks to its larger cover screen that improves design and usability.

One common complaint about foldable phones has been their relatively shorter battery life compared to traditional smartphones and their camera hardware too not being on par. However, a recent report from South Korea suggests that Samsung aims to address these concerns by significantly improving the battery life and camera quality of the Galaxy Z Flip 5 compared to its predecessor. In fact, the battery life and camera performance of the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is expected to align with the highly regarded Galaxy S23 series.

These improvements come in the wake of a previous report stating that increasing camera resolution and sensor size is challenging due to space limitations in foldable phones. If you were disappointed to learn that the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is likely to retain the dual 12 MP rear camera setup of its predecessor, you may now find solace in the fact that real-life photography performance is expected to see a “significant improvement through software enhancements.”

While it’s true that megapixel count alone doesn’t determine the overall camera quality in today’s mobile industry, and Samsung reportedly faced challenges in increasing pixel count due to space limitations, it remains to be seen if the company’s software expertise can entirely bridge the technical gap between this upcoming foldable model and the Galaxy S23 lineup.

The Galaxy S23 features a triple camera system headlined by a 50 MP sensor on both the 6.1-inch S23 and the larger 6.6-inch S23+. While this setup is inferior to the quad camera arrangement with a 200 MP main sensor on the rear of the S23 Ultra, it would still represent a significant upgrade if the Z Flip 5 manages to “match its level” over the imaging capabilities of the Z Flip 4.

In terms of battery life, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 already showed a notable improvement over its predecessors, even surpassing the endurance of the Galaxy S23 series in video streaming tests. If the Z Flip 5 can further enhance battery performance without increasing the battery capacity, it would undoubtedly be an exciting prospect for the sequel to the current most popular foldable phone.

Meanwhile, according to leaked specifications, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is expected to feature a 12 MP ultra-wide camera, a 10 MP front-facing camera, Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, 8 GB RAM, 128 GB/256 GB storage options, 5G connectivity, eSIM support, GPS, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, USB 3.2 Type-C port, 25W fast charging, and wireless charging.

The leaked information also reveals that the Galaxy Z Flip 5 will come equipped with a 3,700mAh battery, which is similar to the battery capacity of the standard Galaxy S23. Additionally, it will boast a 3.4-inch cover screen that allows users to utilize the camera, check notifications, and access stock apps and widgets. Therefore, despite having a slightly smaller battery capacity, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is expected to provide a battery life comparable to the Galaxy S23, thanks to the convenience of the small cover display for various tasks.
