Samsung is reportedly considering equipping its upcoming flagship phone, the Galaxy S24 Ultra, with 65W fast charging technology. To achieve this, the company is exploring the application of stacked battery designs used in electric vehicles to mobile devices.
This has been revealed by Twitter leaker RGcloudS who said the enhanced charging speed is made possible through the implementation of stacked batteries and the use of new cooling gel, ensuring optimal temperature management and stability for the 5,000 mAh battery.
There are rumors suggesting that Samsung is currently conducting a pilot manufacturing run for stacked batteries in China. However, due to limited availability, it is uncertain if the upgraded battery technology will be implemented across the entire Galaxy S24 lineup.
Also, while RGcloudS claims the Galaxy S24 Plus will feature a 5,000 mAh battery, it remains unclear whether it will adopt a stacked structure or utilize a different design. Samsung may not need to accommodate such high charging speeds for the Galaxy S24 Plus, which could explain the variation in battery structure.
Stacked-type batteries offer numerous advantages, including increased density, improved performance, and enhanced charging capabilities. However, it appears that Samsung might reserve this upgrade exclusively for the premium Galaxy S24 Ultra model.
In the best-case scenario, Samsung may have a sufficient supply of stacked batteries by 2024 to power both the Galaxy S24+ and Galaxy S24 Ultra. However, limited availability could potentially restrict the base Galaxy S24 model from benefiting from this new battery technology.
It is likely that the base Galaxy S24 will continue to support 25W charging, while the rest of the series, particularly the Galaxy S24 Ultra, will boast 65W fast charging and higher battery capacities. Looking ahead to 2024, there are also possibilities of stacked batteries being utilized in the Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Z Fold 6.
The Galaxy S24 series is expected to be announced early next year, with further details to be revealed closer to the launch date. As of now, it is the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 that are slated for launch at the Galaxy Unpacked event on July 26.
