Samsung introduces ViewFinity S9 5K

Samsung is bringing its highly anticipated ViewFinity S9 5K monitor to the United States, providing an opportunity for both Mac and PC users to get their hands on this cutting-edge display. Initially unveiled at CES in January, the 27-inch ViewFinity S9 was launched in South Korea this past June.

Designed with creatives in mind, Samsung’s ViewFinity S9 5K monitor boasts HDR 600 support, a matte display to minimize glares, and an Eye Saver Mode for extended productivity sessions. This first 5K monitor from Samsung features a 5,120 x 2,880 resolution, 99 percent DCI-P3 color coverage, and an impressive 221 pixels per inch. Additionally, users can calibrate the monitor using Samsung’s SmartThings app in either Basic mode, which adjusts gamma settings and white balance, or Professional mode, offering more precise control over luminance and color temperature or space. The ViewFinity S9 5K monitor comes equipped with a 4K camera and is compatible with both PCs and Macs.

Of particular interest is the pricing of the ViewFinity S9 5K monitor. Priced at $1,599, it matches the cost of its direct competitor, the 27-inch Apple Studio Display, which was released in early 2022. While the Studio Display received an 80 rating at the time of its launch, it fell short in certain areas such as its webcam quality, 60Hz refresh rate, and single-zone backlighting. The ViewFinity S9 5K monitor shares the same refresh rate as the Apple counterpart but offers several superior features at no additional cost.

Apple charges an extra $400 for height and angle adjustments, and a staggering $2,299 for a nano-texture glass display option. In contrast, the ViewFinity S9 5K monitor includes a 4K webcam, surpassing Apple’s 12MP offering. Overall, unless one is an adamant Apple enthusiast, Samsung’s ViewFinity S9 5K appears to offer a more compelling choice at a similar price point.

Samsung has announced that the ViewFinity S9 5K monitor will be available for purchase on samsung.com starting in August, although the exact launch date has not been specified. With a price tag of $1,599, customers can explore this high-resolution display option in stores next month and experience the enhanced visuals and functionality it brings to the table.
