The latest iteration of Google’s OS Android Lollipop 5.0 now runs on 18.1 percent of all active Android devices around the globe, according to the latest Android platform distribution numbers revealed by Google this month. These numbers show a staggering rise in Android Lollipop’s adoption rate, which is up by 12.4 percent last reported in June.
However, KitKat still rules the roost with currently running on 39.3 percent devices globally, though saw a slight marginal increase from 39.
2 percent last recorded in June. Jelly Bean comes in next which includes devices from Android 4.1 to Android 4.3 with 33.6 percent devices still running the OS since its launch back in 2012.
Rounding it up were Ice Cream Sandwich, Gingerbread and Froyo where the former makes up 4.1 percent share, Gingerbread comes down to 4.6 percent from 5.6 percent while Froyo is still hanging on with a mere 0.3 share.
In the coming future, we might see Lollipop’s share on a constant rise as a lot of devices now running KitKat are awaiting their Lollipop upgrade. Moreover, there are a plethora of upcoming devices running Android Lollipop yet to be unveiled. Hence, the OS is expected to gain more market share.
Meanwhile, Google is also expected to start seeding out the final version of its next Android M OS sometime in October. Hence, there will be a new appearance in Android’s statistics soon enough. The refreshed Nexus 5 (2015) and the forthcoming Huawei made Nexus will reportedly be the first devices to be launched in the market with the OS onboard.
