Google has officially started rolling out Android 6.0.1 update for its Nexus-branded devices via the OTA update. The company followed up the announcement of the official rollout by posting up factory images of Android 6.0.1 for the Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6, Nexus Player, Nexus 9 (LTE and WiFi), Nexus 5, and Nexus 7 (2013) WiFi and LTE. However, apart from Google’s Nexus devices, other smartphones running Android 6.0 will have to wait for a while before they start receiving the latest update.
“We’re celebrating new emojis on #Nexus which start rolling out today!,” Google announced on its Nexus Google+ page on Monday announcing the rollout to the devices.
The latest Android 6.0.1 update isn’t really a massive upgrade though does comes with a bunch of new features. For instance, the update brings “Contextual Assistance” on Tap filters search listings allowing users to multitask. Another new feature for battery management has been introduced called Doze. It essentially increases the standby battery life of your smartphone when the device is at rest.
Also, the Do Not Disturb mode is back with the popular ‘until next alarm’ option, which allows users to switch over to Silent Mode or priority notification mode until the next alarm. The feature was introduced with Android 5.1 Lolipop though for some reason was neglected in the first Marshmallow release.
Android 6.0.1 also brings small navigation tweaks for tablets. Tablet users will notice that navigation buttons have been switched, as Back and Home buttons are now housed on the left edge of the screen while Recents has been moved to the right. Earlier, these three buttons were housed in the centre. These changes will somewhat make navigation easier on large sized screens while holding the device with both their hands.
Finally, the update brings more emoji support integrated within the keyboard that comes pre-installed on Nexus devices. Though users will have to wait for this update to arrive on the PlayStore, that’ll support this new emoji layout, which is now up to 10 from seven, which include “flag”, “sports”, along with “food” that’ll be getting their own tabs. Until that arrives, users can still enjoy few new emojis such as “hugging face” and “slightly smiling face”.
