Samsung Galaxy Note 7 to feature Corning Gorilla Glass 5: Reports

Ever since Corning Incorporated (NYSE: GLW) introduced Corning Gorilla Glass 5 – another iteration of the company’s screen protecting glass covers that are best known for their toughness, several reports started making rounds that Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Note 7 is the first device to come protected by the Gorilla Glass 5.

Corning Inc., in its official statement, had this to say: “Corning Gorilla Glass 5 is commercially available and is expected to be on product models from leading global brands later this year.”

While it’s unclear what brands the company is referring to, some of the most anticipated products of this year i.e. Samsung Galaxy Note 7 or Apple iPhone 7 are expected to be on the list.

Meanwhile, a story confirming the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 to feature Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection recently surfaced on a Korean website ETNews. According to its report, a newly announced generation of Corning Gorilla Glass will first appear on Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Note 7 phablet.

The story further indicates that Apple’s upcoming iPhone device will also feature the same Corning technology in coming weeks.

“With each successive generation of Corning Gorilla Glass, we have taken cover glass technology to new levels. Gorilla Glass 5 is no exception, extending Corning’s advantage in drop performance over competitive glasses,” Corning’s John Bayne had this to say during the Gorilla Glass 5 launch.

Corning Incorporated, in its press releases, talked a bit about a global study according to which more than 85% smartphone owners have faced phone drops at least once every year if not more. Also, 55% people have dropped their phones (either intentionally or unintentionally) three times or more.

The company’s lab tests also found that Corning Gorilla Glass 5 is the best bet when it comes to preventing phones from severe damages – by 80% survival rate when dropped from 1.6 meters onto hard surfaces.

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 is set to launch in New York on August 2 in New York. However, it appears to be that the device will make appearance by August 7 in Koran market.
