LG V30 will have the highest aperture lens on any smartphone so far

Report of the upcoming LG flagship, the V30 having a dual lens camera at the rear has already been circulating for some time now. Add to that another sweet piece of news, that one of the lenses will have a f/1.6 aperture. That easily makes the V30 to feature the largest aperture on any smartphone to date.

For comparison’s sake, the Samsung Galaxy S8 comes with a single lens rear cam having a f/1.7 aperture. The Apple iPhone 7 Plus again has a dual rear cam, with one of the lens being of f/1.8 aperture. The dual lens rear camera of the LG G6 itself features a f/1.8 aperture lens.

To explain in lay man terms, aperture gives us a rough idea of the amount of light that the sensor is exposed to. The lower the figure is, more will be the amount of light that the sensor will receive, allowing it to recreate a more realistic image of its surrounding. This is particularly true in dimly lit regions. LG, while confirming the feature stated this will ensure images are more life-like and dynamic than otherwise possible.

The V30 camera feature also happens to be an improvement over its predecessor, the V20 that came with a f/1.8 aperture lens. LG said the lower aperture lens will allow for absorbing around 25 percent more light.

In fact, the entire rear cam setup on the V30 has been overhauled with the module itself being 30 percent smaller than on the V20. Further, a new clear glass lens is being used, which again will allow for an unhindered flow of light.

The secondary lens will be a wide angle lens though LG stated that too has been improved to allow for less distortion along the edges. The secondary wide angle lens will have a resolution of 13 megapixel while the primary lens is of 16 megapixel.

A larger aperture is also associated with the much sought after bokeh affect. Since there is more light entering the sensor, this naturally translates to more of the surrounding scene being absorbed. This in turn allowed for the blurring effect of the background subjects, something that has been famously introduced in smartphone photography by the iPhone 7 Plus in its portrait mode.

It now remains to be seen how good the LG V30 camera will turn out to be in real life. The official launch is scheduled during the IFA event in Berlin.
