Imagine this: you’re rushing through the airport, juggling luggage and boarding passes, and you park your car in the sprawling long-term lot. Later, as you’re about to head home, that nagging feeling hits – where did I park? With the new Ray-Ban Meta update, you can simply ask your glasses to remind you of your parking spot. This is just one example of how Meta is leveraging its latest AI model, Llama 3.2, to make its smart glasses more useful. Beyond location reminders, you can now set reminders for tasks, appointments, or even just to call your mom when you land.
This update isn’t just about memory, though. Meta is also introducing voice messaging capabilities. You can now use your glasses to record and send voice messages on WhatsApp and Messenger. This hands-free approach allows you to stay connected while staying present in your surroundings. I personally find this feature incredibly useful when I’m out for a run or walking my dog. I can respond to messages without having to fumble for my phone.
Key Features of the Update:
- AI-Powered Reminders: Set reminders for locations, tasks, or events using voice commands.
- Voice Messaging: Record and send voice messages on WhatsApp and Messenger hands-free.
- Live Translation: Translate conversations in real-time with support for Spanish, French, and Italian initially, with more languages coming soon.
- Enhanced Visual Interactions: Scan QR codes and call phone numbers displayed on signs or billboards just by asking.
These new features build upon the existing capabilities of the Ray-Ban Meta glasses, which already allow users to take photos and videos, listen to music, and make calls. With the addition of AI-powered reminders and voice messaging, the glasses are becoming increasingly versatile and integrated into daily life.

- Contextual Reminders:
- Location-based reminders: The glasses can use GPS data to remember where you parked your car, bike, or even your spot on a crowded beach.
- Time-based reminders: Set reminders for specific times or after a certain duration, like “remind me to call the vet in 2 hours” or “remind me to pick up groceries on my way home.”
- Activity-based reminders: Potentially, future updates could allow for reminders linked to specific activities like “remind me to water the plants when I get back from my run.”
- Seamless Voice Messaging:
- Hands-free communication: Record and send voice messages without needing to pull out your phone, making it ideal for situations where you need to be hands-free.
- Enhanced privacy: The glasses use beamforming technology to focus on your voice and minimize background noise, ensuring clearer messages and greater privacy.
- Personalization: Potentially, future updates could allow for personalized voice message features, like voice-to-text transcription or even AI-generated voice responses.
The Impact of Live Translation
Another groundbreaking feature in this update is the introduction of live translation. While still in its early stages, this capability has the potential to revolutionize communication across language barriers.
- Real-time translation: The glasses can translate conversations in real-time, allowing you to understand and be understood by people speaking different languages.
- Supported languages: Initially, the feature supports Spanish, French, and Italian, with plans to expand to more languages soon.
- Travel and accessibility: This feature is particularly useful for travelers, allowing for more natural and spontaneous interactions with locals. It also holds great promise for improving accessibility for people with hearing impairments.
I recently had the opportunity to test this feature during a trip to Italy. While the translation wasn’t always perfect, it was certainly good enough to facilitate basic conversations and navigate everyday situations. I was able to order food, ask for directions, and even have a simple chat with a local shopkeeper, all thanks to the live translation feature on my Ray-Ban Meta glasses.
