Google usually releases a device in Q4 annually, and this year’s devices look to arrive around the same time that we’ve seen them arrive in recent years. In this case, the LG Nexus 2015 release date has been pegged for October, which fits in line with Google’s October release of the LG Nexus 5 in 2013.
LG and Google will team up for the second-generation Nexus 5, the second Nexus smartphone the two have collaborated on since the Nexus lineup was first introduced by Google. With the launch of the second-generation Nexus 5 (2015) will come Android Pay, Google’s own mobile payment system that looks to absorb Google Wallet. Google expects Android Pay to receive mass adoption by Android consumers worldwide, and, with the majority of the world using Android by a landslide, Android Pay looks to reach even further than Apple Pay. According to Apple Pay news this week, Apple’s payment system is on the decline in the United States, a place that has normally been receptive to practically anything Apple does.
While the October timeframe isn’t surprising, and Google announced the arrival of Android Pay at its I/O 2015 conference in late Spring of this year, what is surprising is to see LG work with Google on mobile payments. “The question of whether Android Pay would succeed in the simple payment service market would depend on its ability to dominate the advanced countries’ markets in Europe and North America…this is in part why Google chose LG, given the latter’s success in these markets,” said an industry watcher familiar with the matter.
While LG saw its sales increase by 36% in the United States, the Korean manufacturer also saw its sales decline 29% in its home country. LG did outpace Samsung, however, with first-time buyers, but we’re not sure LG’s small-time success with sales is the reason behind Google’s decision to pair up with the manufacturer; after all, Google partnered with LG in 2013 for the first-gen. Nexus 5, and Samsung was still leading in sales in the US as Apple’s only rival.
As for the second-gen. Nexus 5, recent leaked specs include a 5.2-inch, Full HD Plastic OLED (or P-OLED) display with 1,920 x 1,080p screen resolution, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 620 processor, 4GB of LPDDR3 RAM, Bluetooth 4.2, a 4MP front camera with Iris Detection, 13MP back camera (IMX278 RGBW) with optical image stabilization (OIS), up to 64GB of internal storage, a 3,180mAh battery with a MediaTek MT3188 wireless charging receiver, back button with an integrated fingerprint sensor, and Quick Charge 2.0 with a USB Type-C connector. The DDR3 RAM, Snapdragon 620 processor, and MediaTek Wireless charging are indications that LG and Google plan on making the new Nexus 5 a mid-range device. The plastic back cover and $300-$400 price tag rumored for the LG Nexus 5 (2015) confirm the same.
The Huawei Nexus will feature a 5.7-inch, AMOLED panel from Samsung with a Quad HD screen resolution of 2,560 x 1,440p, a 21MP back camera utilizing Sony’s IMX230 camera sensor, metal unibody design, and Rezence/WiPower wireless charging.
