It’s been two weeks since Apple announced the first beta of iOS 9.1, and now the company has released the Beta 2 update of the OS. It’ll be initially available for developers via an over-the-air (OTA) update or through Apple Developer Center. Meanwhile, the update might also be available to public beta testers by tomorrow, provided the iPhone maker sticks to its release schedule.
Most of the improvements in the Beta 2 update are further refinements of the features introduced in iOS 9.1 Beta 1. There’s also a new Messages option in the Settings app that allows users to disable contact photos. While release notes reveal known issues with iCloud Keychain and PhotoKit. In addition, there’s a bug where Podcasts might crash if users play the last item in a list.
Meanwhile, a new update is also available for the non-beta channel with iOS 9.0.1. All users can now download the update, just head over to Software Update in your iPhone’s Settings app or do it via iTunes. According to Apple, the iOS 9.0.1 update fixes a number of bugs such issues with setup, frames fixes in Safari and Photos, along with a bug fix where users with a custom APN setup via profile would lose their cellular data. In addition, it also fixes an issue where alarms and timers ‘failed to play’.
While iOS 9.0.1 seems to be a relatively minor update, the company is already prepping the next update with iOS 9.1 beta 2 mentioned above which would feature ‘under the hood’ refinements and possibly bring additional functionality.
Apple this week also officially announced that iOS 9 has already made history, with the fastest adoption rate ever. More than half of all iOS devices now run on the latest OS that brings Search and Siri refinements, new iPad features, a News app along with better battery management. Moreover, the best part, it does not demand a huge amount of storage space unlike its predecessor, apparently 3.5x less.
In related news, Apple has also confirmed the availability of its latest-gen iPhones in physical stores starting tomorrow. Apple retail stores will open at 8 A.M local time tomorrow, and both the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus will be available on all major carriers which include AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless, additional carriers along with select Apple Authorized Resellers. The duo will be available in gold, silver, space gray along with the new rose gold metallic color. Notably, Apple will not be offering in-store pickup options until Day 1 after launch i.e. September 26.
