Motorola Moto Z3 – the world’s first 5G phone launched in the US for $480

The Moto Z3 is finally here, and it does come across as a considerable upgrade over the Moto Z3 Play. That includes a Snapdragon 835 SoC for the Z3 along with a dual-lens camera at the rear.

Assisting the SD 835 SoC is an Adreno 540 GPU along with a 4 GB RAM. Native storage stands at 64 GB though there is provision to add another 2 TB via SD card. Upfront, it’s a 6-inch full HD AMOLED display that dominates things, flanked on either side by super thin bezels along with thin strips of it along the top and bottom. Also, for those who care, there is no notch at the top which does make for a nice change in a sea of phone me-toos that have the notched display.

The Moto Z3 also comes with a side mounted power button that doubles up as the fingerprint scanner as well. Then there also is the face unlock feature too as an additional security option. The phone runs a near stock version of Android 8.1 Oreo and comes with a water repellant build. Further, its a 3000mAh battery that powers the device and supports TurboPower tech, which Motorola said allows for half a day of usage after just 30 mins of charging.

Coming to the optics, this also happens to be another significant upgrade over the Z3 Play, what with a 12-megapixel primary sensor and another black & white secondary sensor also of 12 megapixels. The primary camera here boasts of 1.25um pixels and f/2.0 aperture and is complemented by a dual LED flash along with phase detection auto focus tech. The front benefits from an 8-megapixel camera also of f/2.0 aperture and 1.12-micron pixels.

Another salient feature of the new Z3 is that it supports 5G Moto Mod snap-on accessory which when attached to the Z3 will allow it to latch on to 5G networks. However, the 5G mods can’t be expected before early next year while 5G networks is going to be restricted to certain pockets only, during the initial stages at least. Also, it’s not known what the 5G Moto Mod is going to cost when launched.

Motorola One Power with bezel-less display, notch and Android One coming soon

As for the Z3, it’s going to set one back $480 and is going to be available only in the US for now while shipping starts August 16.
